Hooray, it’s here…the day to shop for your prom dress has finally arrived! You’ve been gathering inspiration, taking note of flattering dress styles, and have been scouring the Red Carpet for ideas, and now it’s time to find a gown of your own. To make sure you’re prepared, we’ve got some last minute tips for you to make your shopping trip as easy as possible:
Make an appointment
While you don’t always need an appointment to shop for your prom gown, calling ahead to make sure the stylist that you love is working, or calling ahead for a one on one appointment is sure to make your shopping experience that much easier. Plus, if you make an appointment, the store stylists know their selection best, so they’ll be able to pick out styles you may love based on what your style is before you get there, so you’ll be able to head right into the fitting room.
Choose your undergarments carefully
Just like when you’re going shoe shopping and have to make sure to wear a good pair of socks, you want to make sure that you’re dressing the part when shopping for your gown. Thinking of going strapless? Make sure to wear a strapless bra, so that you can get the full effect. Make sure to stay away from bright undergarments too, just in case you decide to go for a lighter color gown, you don’t want a neon bra to distract you from the overall look!
Try on everything…and we mean everything
Don’t just stop at one style or one color! Trying on a variety of silhouettes, colors, and styles will ensure that you don’t miss out on something that could potentially be the one. You know what they say: you never know until you try, so fill that fitting room!
Bring Heels
Unless you’re planning on wearing a flat shoe the night of prom, make sure to bring a pair of heels with you so that you can get a better idea of the look. Don’t worry if you haven’t picked out your specific shoes yet, just bring along a trusty pair of nude heels to help you envision how you’ll look on prom night.
Don’t shop alone
Have your mom, sister, or BFF tag along with you. It’s always helpful to get a second opinion, and a second eye will help make your decision that much easier.
Don’t forget about your budget
While it’s easy to get wrapped up in all of the amazing gowns, be sure to stick to your budget. If you have a price range in mind before you go shopping, you won’t be tempted to blow your whole prom budget on a couture dress when you can find an equally amazing one within your price range.
Don’t forget about alterations
While you’re always hopeful that your favorite dress will fit to a tee, don’t forget that you can always have a seamstress adjust anything that doesn’t fit quite right!
