What You Need to Know About Prom Dress Alterations

jovani prom dress 2015
Last week, we shared some of the best places to get your prom dress altered around Boston. This week, we’re continuing our alteration education with some tips for getting your dress to fit exactly the way you want.

1. For the perfect length: Before you go see your seamstress, you should have your shoes picked out. Having your shoes with you when you go to your first alteration appointment will ensure that, should you opt for a 5-inch heel when you thought you’d be going for a 2-inch one, your dress will end up too short. A good rule of thumb to follow when deciding upon the length of your dress: most designers recommend the hem of your gown lightly touch the floor.

2. When to add bra cups: There are a few reasons you might want to consider adding bra cups to the bodice of your dress. First, if the gown bunches in that area or is too big, the cups can help the dress maintain its proper shape. Bra cups should also be considered if wearing a regular bra with your dress will be unsightly, difficult or uncomfortable. Consider bra cups if your dress is backless and can’t be worn with a bra, or if you have a strapless style, so you won’t have to worry about your bra peeking out above the top of your dress.

3. Fitted, but not tight: If you’re getting your dress taken in remember this: once your dress is pinned in place, try sitting down. If your dress feels like it might burst, or sitting is downright impossible, have your seamstress loosen up the pins. Most prom nights start off with a seated dinner, and if your dress is too tight to sit down in, your night will be off to a rough start. To prevent a strapless gown from falling down while still allowing enough room to sit comfortably, the gown should fit snugly in the bodice, but should be fitted, not tight, throughout your rib cage, torso, and hips.

4. Consider undergarments: Like your shoes, you should plan to have your undergarments picked out before you go to your first dress fitting. Wearing a bra can make a dress fit more snugly, while shapewear can make the fit appear looser.

prom matching

Should You Match Your Date?

When it comes to matching your date for prom, gone are the days where it was a fashion sin to show up with anything less than perfectly coordinated ensembles. With an emphasis on originality in how you dress, in are the days where it’s 100% up to you to make any fashion choices you want. If you want to wear grey and your date is thinking of polka dots, why not rock both looks together? If you’re more of a traditional couple, and you love the idea of your dress matching his tie, then why not go for that perfectly coordinated prom pic? When it comes down to it, it’s your choice and as long as your date is on the same page as you, go with whatever you want to rock on prom night.

If you’re still on the fence on what to do, worry not because we’ve got a few tips to sway you in the right direction for you:

Respect your dates opinion
Yes, we know that prom is 90% about the dress (okay, we might be a little biased) but in all honesty, once you’ve found the dress of your dreams you want to make sure that it lives up to all your prom expectations, so changing your look to match your date might be the last thing on your mind. Before you go vetoing your dates outfit choices, think about getting creative. If your date is set on a hot pink tie and your dress is white, think about adding hot pink accents like a hair clips or hot pink nails, so you two can tie your looks in together.

Get the colors right
If your date is the type of guy who’s happy to go along with whatever you want for a color choice, make sure you either go shopping together or sending him a picture of the dress. You don’t want to show up for prom pictures with his tie a completely different shade of blue than your gown.

Mix and match
Just because you’re wearing a floral print dress doesn’t mean your date has to show up in a floral tux. Pick one of the strong colors from the pattern and have your date rock that color instead. This will give you guys a cohesive, yet unique look.

Have fun with it
Prom is your time to shine, so don’t sweat the small stuff. Even if your date refuses to budge from wearing his favorite powder blue tux, if he has the confidence to rock it, his positivity has to rub off on you!

prom date

How to Get a Date for Prom

prom date

via post-gazette.com

Prom is right around the corner, and while you’re securing all of your prom essentials, don’t forget about your prom date. Waiting too long could mean that all the good ones have already been taken, so the sooner you start looking, the better! So to keep you on your toes, we’ve got 5 easy ways to make sure you’ve got a date in time for the big day.

1. Ask your friends
If you’re flying solo in the relationship department this prom season, don’t be afraid to ask around to see if your friends know anyone who’s looking for a date. Someone could have a cute cousin or a great neighbor that’s looking for a partner just like you.

2. Hint to your crush
Guys don’t always plan things in advance, so chances are your crush might not even be thinking of a prom date yet. Don’t let that stop you though, if you really want to go with someone drop subtle hints about how excited you are for the big day and they just might get the picture quicker than you think. If subtle hints fail, don’t be afraid to get assertive and ask them yourself. The worst they can say is no, and that will give you a chance to find someone else to go with instead of being stuck last minute without a date.

3. Don’t forget about other schools
Whether it’s someone from your town’s soccer team or someone you volunteer with, don’t forget that you can ask someone from another school too. If you’re nervous about it being too much pressure, you can always ask them to go as friends…you never know, it could turn into a date after all!

4. Take up extracurriculars
Now we don’t want to sound like your parents here, but after school activities are great ways to meet people (aka potential dates). You could end up bonding over a painting in drawing class with your potential Prince Charming.

5. Go with your friends
Last but not least, don’t forget about your friends. While you may not be interested in them romantically, a good guy friend may be the best date. After all, who else will let you dance as crazy as you want on the dance floor without judging you?
